Companies start shifting away from Computer Science College Degrees as a requirement for employment

CNBC has recently reported that Google, Apple, and 13 other companies no longer require employees to have a college degree. This huge shift in the industry shows companies are realizing that a college education does not necessarily equal the intangibles needed for the job; such as a strong work ethic, grit, and talent.

“[Academic] qualifications will still be taken into account and indeed remain an important consideration when assessing candidates as a whole” explains Maggie Stilwell, Ernst and Young’s managing partner for talent. The need for a Computer Science diploma “will no longer act as a barrier to getting a foot in the door.”

The loosening of these qualifications has in part to do with a shortage of programmers. A recent study by Code.org reports that the U.S. Department of Labor expects that as many as 1 million programming jobs will be unfilled by 2020. Major companies like IBM are looking elsewhere to fill this need. “We are hiring because the nature of work is evolving,” says Ginni Rommety, CEO of IBM. “As industries from manufacturing to agriculture are reshaped by data science and cloud computing, jobs are being created that demand new skills – which in turn requires new approaches to education, training and recruiting.”

With the need for more developers, people are turning to alternatives forms of coding education to help teach the skills needed to get these jobs. LEARN academy helps students fill this void by offering a full-stack web developer curriculum plus real-world training through their internship program.

When choosing between a Coding Bootcamp or CS Degree, Bianca Portal, LEARN academy Career Services Manager, notes that “more hiring managers every day are learning about what coding bootcamps are and how these developers can contribute to their teams.” She also sees that “many of the local hiring managers are getting first hand experience with bootcamp grads during the LEARN internship program and are able to see for themselves the value in a coding bootcamp graduate.”
